Vivian is a self taught artist with her work coming from a basket making background. She was a full time basket maker in the 1980s using conventional and found materials producing a range of traditional and contemporary designs. She first started weaving with copper in 2003 using it to accentuate lines of weaving within her baskets. Copper is a beautiful material to work with, the combination of malleability and strength opens up infinite possibilities to create and develop new ideas. The application of using patinas or heat to the finished work adds an element of uncertainty and surprise which is always exciting.
Vivian has been involved in many solo and group exhibitions in New Zealand and overseas. She lived on Great Barrier Island which is an inspiring place to live and work, and feels her art is certainly influenced by this beautiful environment. She has recently moved to Reefton and is continuing with her art from her new home there.
